Second Annual Summer Fiction Contest Winning Stories

Amanda, Sabina, and Dylan
Thanks to all of the students
who submitted stories this year! We received some marvelous stories
and there were some difficult decisions to be made. Two of our
judges were in favor of the winning story, while the other one had a
different preference. There were five top stories in our view, and
others that we also liked quite a bit. It was an excellent collection of
stories!
We debated for an hour about
the choices, and once we had made our decisions we tried to guess who
the authors were, based on the competitors from last year’s contest.
These stories are very well written, very interesting, and all had
different and surprising takes on our theme.
We enjoyed reading them and
talking about them—and envisioning the futures of these excellent young
writers. It is one of the year’s highpoints to read and discuss
the stories, and it also brings Maria back to see us, bringing her
thoughtful and professional background to bear on the stories.
Congratulations to Dylan,
Sabina, and Amanda!

Dylan Lindsay took first
prize and $125 with Catch of the Day, a story about family
dynamics and an annual fishing trip that goes very wrong. Kate
Brannum, one of our judges, could not get enough of the dialog of the
colorful family.
Sabina Fickenwirth is a
repeat winner. Her story, On the Rocks: A Tidal Miscalculation,
took second place and $75. The story describes a group of kids taking
frightening risks that could have turned out even worse.
Amanda Miller took third
place with a story that envisioned a trip to Hell, but was called To
Kansas We Go.
